The specially configured iPods utilize a feature that provides an elegant solution for tour and education environments. Called “Museum Mode”, the iPods allow users to navigate and access content such as text, audio files, images, and video clips through customized menus. Specific menu categories link users to content or groups of content that in turn can be linked or cross-linked to still more content based on the requirements of the programmed tour or lecture. The users only see what is available to them without having to or be given access to other iPod functions.

For example, a tour stored on these iPods directs to a user to a location in the library. The tour pauses until the user reaches the designated location where the user restarts the tour and is presented with options for more information. This is just one scenario that takes advantage of this feature. The technology provides a great degree of flexibility when creating & developing content for an educational environment. Other possible content options include:

Course Tutorial - Instructors can prepare and structure course materials for use with the “Notes” feature and load it onto an iPod for a student to use as a self-paced tutorial. Content can be regularly updated with new or modified information.

Instruction-On-The-Fly - The portable nature of the iPod allows users to view previously downloaded podcasts, videos, and “Notes’’ configured educational, or training content virtually anywhere. This allows users to prepare for exams or meetings (without the need for a laptop) while traveling on busses, trains, or planes.

Lectures - Video or audio of campus lectures could be made available on these iPods or with options like iTunes U, users could download them to their own computers in turn transfer them to their own iPods.

The Marriott Library Multimedia Center is interested in collaborating with the University community to provide content on our iPods. Staff, instructors, departments, or groups interested in developing content for these customized iPods, please use this form to contact us.
