Dashboard is home to widgets: mini-applications that let you perform common tasks and provide you with fast access to information. With a single click, Dashboard appears, complete with widgets that bring you a world of information — real-time weather, stock tickers, flight information and more — instantly. Dashboard disappears just as easily, so you can get back to what you were doing.

Tiger includes a suite of widgets to get you started, and you can add more anytime. With so many widgets at your disposal, the Widget Bar comes in handy. Click the plus sign and Dashboard launches a Widget Bar displaying every available widget. Drag widgets from the Bar to the Dashboard and watch as they appear with a cool ripple effect. Once you have your widgets where you want them, just close the Widget Bar with a single click. |

dataComet 10.0.1 [2003.11.03]
http://www.databeast.com/ for
more information.
—Available
in all labs.
—Look under Applications Internet & Terminal dataComet 10.0.1
dataComet-Secure VX for OS X offers fast, reliable terminal emulation for local Shell sessions, Telnet, SSH1 & SSH2, and serial devices.
- Telnet sessions offer Kerberos 5 and SOCKS v4 security options
- Supports both SSH1 and SSH2 sessions with strong encryption + SCP file transfer
- Security features allow better local security than Terminal; e.g., you can allow Telnet and SSH use while denying users access to Shell sessions on Kiosk machines
- Emulates VT100 - VT320, PC-ANSI, SCO-ANSI, and IBM-3279 for mainframe access
- Extensive file transfer support: SCP, X/Y/ZModem, IBM IND$FILE
- Edit windows for off-line composition with easy paste-thru
to emulator windows using the Enter key
- Thorough on-line documentation (500KB of text)
- On-line help: pressing Control and selecting a menu or dialog item fetches the documentation for the item
- Powerful AppleScript and macro support with automatic macro recording and an easy-to-use key remapping dialog
- Modeless dialogs ease session configuration
What's new in this version:
Bug fixes include improved SSH2 and Shell session security, faster scrollback buffering, better support for automatic reconnects, and improved EMACS key handling.
New features include support for mouse wheel events, a full 16-color background option for VT100/VT220/VT320 sessions, and new security macros which allow dataComet-Secure VX to be configured for Kiosk applications where you need to allow users to make SSH connections, but deny them direct access to the Shell layer.

DiskErase [2003.11.03]
http://www.cmu.edu/computing/project/macosx/Tools_Created.html for
more information.
—Available
in all labs.
—Look under Applications Utilities DiskErase
Apple
provides a "Disk Utility" application to format disks,
but it expects to have administrator privileges to be able
to do anything. These privileges are not required by the underlying
operating system merely to erase removable media. Carnegie
Mellon University provides an application called DiskErase
to allow users to erase and
re-format removable media without needing to be administrators.
The installation provides support for erasing floppy, Zip,
LS-120 (SuperDisk), and DVD-RAM media using various invocations
of Apple's "disktool" and "newfs" commands.
Via another mechanism, DiskErase allows erasing CD-RW discs,
so they can be burned again. DiskErase provides a reasonable
user interface
for detecting media inserted and ejected while it is already
running, as well.
If
you deploy Disk Erase at your site, you may need to customize
a stanza in the source code which translates low-level device
names to human-readable device descriptions; otherwise, the
user will be presented with only the low-level device
name, which
is less than useful for differentiating between drives attached
to a machine. Many popular devices, as well as some others
Carnegie
Mellon University has in their clusters, are already supported,
but this does not
guarantee it is ready for use at your site. For more information,
look at the comments in the source code.
Disk
Erase is not future-proof; it depends on a private framework
to detect disk insertions and provide a user-friendly response
to them. This framework is not guaranteed by Apple to maintain
the same API in future versions of Mac OS X. It is possible
that Disk Erase will need to be updated for future OS versions. |

Backup 1.4 [2005.10.08]

more information.
—Available
in all labs.
—Look under Applications
Utilities DV
Backup
DV
Backup is a Mac OS X application which lets you use your digital
camcorder as a data backup device. You can use DV Backup to store
over 16GB of data per hour of tape, depending on what level of
protection you require to allow recovery from tape errors, and
you can span backups over multiple tapes for unlimited backup
capacity. Backups can also be compressed to increase the use
of available tape space.
You can also use DV Backup to backup to a hard drive. This
allows you to keep backups readily available if you feel
that regular
access will be needed to them. When this is no longer the case,
these backups can be easily transferred to tape for longer
term storage. Similarly if it is suspected that regular
access will
be needed to a backup which has been previously archived to
tape, that backup can be easily transferred to the hard
drive for more
convenient availability.
DV Backup works with most DV and Digital8 camcorders. It also
works with most DVCAM and some DVCPRO decks which support larger
3 hour tapes, providing a corresponding capacity increase of
over 50GB per tape for certain devices supporting up to 5.5
hours of recording time.
DV Backup automatically remotely controls the camcorder, no
user intervention is needed to position the tapes or otherwise
control
the camera, all tape operations are entirely automatic and
hands-free.
 Features:
- Backup,
restore, verify with up to 11.5GB (SP) and 17.5GB (LP) capacity
per hour of tape
- Hard
drive store to keep regularly-accessed backups conveniently
available
- Capability
to seamlessly span backups over an unlimited number of multiple
tapes
- Ability
to perform selective backups and restores (with "Direct
Access" for restoring)
- Ability
to group regularly-used file/folder collections into named
sets for convenience
- Option
of incremental and compressed backups
- Full
table-of-contents listing for each tape including user comments
- unattended
scheduled backups feature
- Fully
automatic control of the camera including all tape positioning
- User-configurable
buffer size with underrun and overrun prevention
- 8
levels of error protection/recovery, from none through to full
duplication
- File/folder
archive during backup, de-archive during restore
- PAL,
NTSC and SECAM MiniDV, Digital8 and DVCAM devices supported
- Drag-and-drop
functionality
