The world's fastest desktop computer, the Apple Computer Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5, is now available in the following locations:

Marriott Library Multimedia Center - There are 94 machines available for patron use in the main computer lab.

Union Lab - UMacs 6 through 20 in the north area of the center.

Benchmark Heritage Center Lab - PMac-4 on the table to the right of the main door and PMacs 5 through 10 on the tables on the left side of the lab.

Sage Point Residence Hall Lab - SMacs 2 through 7 on the front row of the main teaching lab.

The most powerful Macintosh ever built, 1100 of them clustered together forms "...the world's third fastest supercomputer". Whether you have 1100 or just one, the Power Mac G5 puts tremendous creative firepower at your disposal.

The Student Computing Labs has deployed over a hundred Power Mac G5's with two PowerPC G5 64-bit processors, an advanced system controller, ultrafast 400MHz 128-bit memory, 512 MB of RAM, and an ATI RADEON 9600 Pro video card with 64MB DDR SDRAM. When combined with Mac OS X, the result is an incredibly stable machine that is capable of handling massive image files, high end audio and video, desktop publishing, office functions, and multiple operations quickly and efficiently.

Work on a lab report in Word while entering your lab data in Excel. Clean up a photograph in Photoshop for that brochure that your creating in InDesign. Edit video in Final Cut Pro while importing your soundtrack selection through iTunes. Best of all, you can even do most of this at the same time without having to wait for the processor or the hard drive.

There is more to the Power Mac G5 for lab users than just raw computing power. It's design features a whole set of conveniences that make it more user friendly than any previous Macintosh.

Ports, Ports, and Ports - With the G5, you can still use your old USB 1.0 and FireWire 400 devices, but you now have the hardware to take advantage of the incredible speed and power of USB 2.0 and FireWire 800. There is even Optical Digital Audio in and out.

The feature that lab users will really appreciate are the handy set of USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 ports on the front of the tower. You no longer have to blindly search around the back of the CPU to plug in your external devices.

The Power & Hardware to Burn - With all of this power, you should be able to have some fun. The G5s in the labs are all equipped with a "SuperDrive" that can read and/or write data, music and video to the following formats:

  • Commercial CDs
  • Commercial DVDs
  • CD-R/-RW
  • DVD-R/-RW
  • DVD+R/+RW (for data only)

Energy Efficient Quiet Operation - All of this processing power generates a large amount of heat that needs to be vented out of box. Rather than have the internal cooling fans on at full power all of the time like most computers, the Power Mac G5 has cooling zones that are thermostatically controlled. The internal fans are powered up to full strength only when they need to. As a result, not only is the G5 more energy efficient but it runs quieter than any previous, dual processor gigahertz Macintosh.

When you get the opportunity, see just how much your overall productivity can increase when working on the stable, fast, and robust G5.
