Not only is the PowerPC 970 - the "G5" - the first 64-bit personal computer microprocessor, but it is fully backwards compatible with 32-bit PowerPC software - which means it can run all Mac OS X software without modification. 64-bit integers can store a range of values 4.3 billion (4.3 thousand million) times as large as 32-bit integers. The PowerPC 970 also has arguably the most advanced architecture of any PC microprocessor. The Power Macintosh G5 is not only the first 64-bit PC, but it is also the first PC with a number of powerful technologies - such as HyperTransport and 133 MHz PCI-X - all of which boost overall performance.
