Getting an AIM or .Mac Account
To use iChat AV, you need to have an AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), .Mac or Jabber account. Note, you can get an AIM account for free.
If you want to transfer files or chat with a friend in the same lab you can actually use iChat without using a AIM, .Mac or Jabber account, but instead use bonjour, which access just on the same lab subnet.
When
you have your AIM or .Mac username and password, launch iChat AV
from the follow these steps:
Setting
up iChat AV
- Select "Continue" from the "Getting Started" window.
- In
the "Set up a New iChat Account" window, change "Student
Computing" and "Labs" to your first and last name.
- If
you have a .Mac account, click on the pull-down menu and
select ".Mac
Account". Enter your "Account Name" (such
as "cool_person@mac.com") and password. Select "Continue" to
proceed.

If
you have an AIM account, click on the pull-down menu and
select "AIM
Account". Enter your "Screen Name" (such
as "cool_person")
and password. Select "Continue" to proceed.

- In the
next window, iChat will ask if you wish to set up Jabber Instant
messaging.

- In the
next window, iChat will ask if you wish to turn on Bonjour
messaging.

- The "Set up iChat AV" window will then appear.
If you are using one of the computers with an iSight
camera or if you are using your own webcam, you will
be able to adjust the camera using the window and
audio bar graph. If
you are using one of the computers with a built-in
microphone or your own microphone but no camera,
you can use the audio bar graph to check the audio
signal. Select "Continue" to proceed.

- In
the final window, read the information and select "Done."
- Your
buddy list will appear. If you chose "Use Bonjour messaging", the Bonjour list will also appear and show users who are using iChat in the same lab you're in.
