The Music Keyboard

The Mac Video Editing Station #1 (MVMac-1) is equipped with an M-Audio Keystation e49 USB Keyboard like the one shown below:

The keyboard will work with many applications that support MIDI including composition software like GarageBand, Logic Pro and Sibelius. Garageband does not require the user to configure any settings to operate with the keyboard. This is not the case with Logic Pro and Sibelius which requires some user configuration to setup use of the keyboard. These are some basic instructions on setting up a music keyboard:

GarageBand | Logic Pro | Sibelius

Before doing anything, power on the keyboard using the switch that is near the USB port. Next, check to see if both ends of the USB cable are connected; one end to the instrumental keyboard, the other to the keyboard.

Using GarageBand '08

Launch GarageBand. In the "Audio" file of the Apple Menu, select "GarageBand" and it will bring up the GarageBand '08 menu as shown below. If you do not have an existing project, create a new music project.

After creating or opening your project, if you see a keyboard display on the screen, then no input device is detected and you need to troubleshoot the issue. Else, the GarageBand '08 window should display as shown below and it is now ready to use.

To change the instrument, double-click on the current instrument icon or click on the "i" button at the bottom, and the window will pull out a list of options on the right as shown below.

To record played notes, click on the dark red button at the bottom and play the keyboard as shown below (right). To add more instruments into the list, click on the "+" button at the bottom as shown below (left).

Using Logic Pro 8

Launch Logic Pro. In the "Audio" file of the Apple Menu, select "Logic Pro" and it will bring the Logic Pro menu as shown below. If you do not have an existing project, create a new music project.

After selected initial setup options, the Logic Pro main window should looks like what is shown below.

To change the instrument, click on the desire track under the Global Tracks as shown at the bottom-left and then select the instrument from the Library menu as shown at the bottom-right. If you can not hear any sound or level changes when you play on the keyboard, double-check that the keyboard is connected properly into the computer.

If sound is playing through the internal speaker of the Mac instead of through the headset, click on the "Logic Pro" menu and select "Preferences..." and then select "Audio..." The Audio Preferences window will display as shown below. From "Device" menu select either "Built-in Line Output/input" or "Built-in Line Output/ Digital Input" and then click on "Apply Changes".

To change settings of the instrument, double-click on instrument code under "I/O" at the left pane as shown on the right. For Yamaha Grand Piano, the instrument code is "EXS24". After that the setting windows will pop up as shown below. To change the settings, click on the turner and drag the mouse pointer upward to increase, drag the mouse pointer downward to decrease the value.

Using Sibelius 4

Launch Sibelius 4. On startup a window will open alerting you that the MIDI devices have changed and asking you to check the new settings. Select "OK" and the "Devices" settings window will appear.

The "Playback Device " and "Input Device" settings should look exactly like the ones shown above. If they do, in the Input Device tab as shown below, the bar graph indicator in the black box will light up and a tone will be heard over the headphones when you press a keyboard key.

Select "OK" to bring up the "Quick Start" window as shown below and you are now ready to start using the keyboard in Silelius.

Sibelius -Troubleshooting

If the "Quick Start" window, not the "Devices" settings window, appears immediately on startup, select "Close" and "Quit" Sibelius. Make sure that the keyboard is powered on and check the USB connections again. Relaunch Sibelius.

If the "Devices" settings window does not match what is shown in the large graphic above, Sibelius will not work with the keyboard. To refresh the settings, quit Sibelius, log out, log back in, and relaunch the application.

Note: If you are unable to get Sibelius or any application to work with the keyboard please ask for assistance at the service counter.
