Mac OS X Printing Workarounds [2004.02.13]

You should be able to print most databases through the Citrix ICA Client. There are a few that may not be so cooperative. There are a couple of workarounds that will allow you to print using Mac OS X

[ Saving to your Home folder | Taking a Screen Capture ]

Saving to your Home folder (back to top)

In the Citrix ICA Client window, select the "Save As" option from under the "File Menu". NOTE: If this is option is grayed out, it has been disabled and you may not be able to save the database information to your home folder. If this is the case, please move on to the next section.

Some databases such as SciFinder Scholar, however, will have its own separate set of controls as shown below on the left. In this instance, if there is a "Save As" option, use it instead of the one under the "File Menu".

SciFinder Scholar "Save As" Option
Selecting the "C:" Drive

In the "Save As" window that appears, select the "C$ on 'Client' (C:)" drive as your destination as shown above on the right. This option essentially refers to the "C:" drive and represents your "Home" folder on the main Hard Drive.

The file format options available to you are all "Text" files. The default format is Rich Text Format or ".rtf". Rich Text Format, unlike most text formats, preserves a degree of document formatting (margins, bold text, tabs, etc.). You should select this file format so as to produce printed documents that are as close to the originals as possible.

Users "Home" folder

After selecting "Save" the file will be deposited in your "Home" folder as shown above on the right. The file can now be opened and printed from another application such as TextEdit.

Taking a Screen Capture (back to top)

If the "Save As" function as been disabled, the only other option available to you to print the database is to take a screen capture of the Citrix ICA Client window displaying the database.

NOTE: This is a very crude way of printing the database and it can also be very time consuming. You really should attempt all other methods of printing the database information before you try this option.

Enlarge the Citrix ICA Client window as far as it will go. You want to get as much of the database document visible as possible. Next press and hold the command (apple) key, then press the shift, key and then the number 4 key:

Command+shift-4

This is the key command that activates Mac OS X screen capture function. Notice how your cursor has changed into a set of crosshairs.

Taking a Screen Capture

Move the cursor to one corner of the Citrix ICA Client window. Now Click and Drag the cursor to the opposite corner. Notice how the area over which you drag becomes shaded as shown above on the right. This shaded area is region that is being imaged and captured by the computer.

When you've covered the area you want, let go of the mouse button. The computer should make the sound of the camera shutter. The Screen capture will appear on your desktop as a ".pdf" file. This can be opened up in either Preview or Adobe Reader and printed from there.

Adobe Reader

Unfortunately, depending on how much of the database information you want, you will have to repeat this process multiple times each time displaying a different portion of the database in the Citrix ICA Client window.
