Configuring Your Internet Browser [2004.02.12]

Once you've installed the client, you should be able to access the Citrix databases in the Library's Articles database right away. If you discover that you are unable to, however, you will need to configure your Internet browser so that it will work with the client when you access a Citrix database.

[ Safari | Internet Explorer | Netscape | Camino/Mozilla/Firefox ]

Safari (back to top)

When you access a Citrix database from the Library Articles database, you download either an ".ica" or ".asp" file with the icon shown on the right. Select the file so that it is highlighted.

Click on "File" in the top menu bar and scroll down to "Get Info" or press and hold down the "command" key followed by the "I" key.

This will open the information window for this file. In the section labeled "Open with:" click on the triangle and open the section as shown on the right.

In this image, the pull down menu button indicates that the ".ica" file should be opened with the "Citrix ICA Client". This is the default setting. If this bar lists a different application or is blank, you will need to set it for the "Citrix ICA Client".

The client should be listed in the pull down menu so all you would need to do is click on the up/down arrows and scroll down the list until you find it. If it is not listed, you will need to select "other" as shown below.

This will open a "Choose Other Application" window in which you can "browse" your system to find where you have stored the Citrix ICA Client application.

When you have finished, close the "Get Info" window.

Safari's built-in security features allow it to open up only certain downloaded files automatically upon completion. Citrix ".ica" files are not one of these. To access the ".ica" files, you will need to double-click on the file to open it with the Citrix ICA Client.

Internet Explorer (back to top)

Launch Internet Explorer and then open the Preferences control window under the "Explorer" menu.

In the "Preferences" window, select "File Helpers" from the list of on the left. This will open the "File Helpers Settings" window to the right. This lists helper applications that are designed to work with Internet browsers and the file types they are set to access.

You will need to create two new entries. Select the "Add" button to open a blank "Edit File Helper" window.

Next, enter the corresponding information in the blank fields as shown below in the two examples. The example on the left shows the information for ".ica" files. This is the type used for the Library Databases. The example on the right shows the information for ".asp" files. This is another Citrix compatible file format and may be used by other databases. Please note that for "File Type" and "Handling" you will need to "Browse" your system for the Citrix ICA client software so that Explorer will "know" where it is located.

When you have finished creating these entries, click "OK" to close the "Edit File Helper" window. Click "OK" again to close the Preferences window.

Netscape (back to top)

When you download a ".ica" file for the first time on Netscape, the browser will automatically launch a "Download Manager" window that asks you one of the following:

  • Open it with the default application (Citrix ICA Client) or open it with another application
  • Save it to disk
  • Always perform this action with this file type from now on.

By selecting the check box and then selecting "OK", the browser will automatically open any ".ica" files using the Citrix ICA Client that you download from this point on. If you need to, you can modify this setting at a later date by opening up the browsers preferences as shown below:

Mozilla/Firefox/Camino (back to top)

When you download a ".ica" file for the first time on either Mozilla or Firefox, the browser will automatically launch a "Download Manager" window that asks you one of the following:

  • Open it with the default application (Citrix ICA Client) or open it with another application
  • Save it to disk
  • Always perform this action with this file type from now on.
Mozilla "Download Manager"
Firefox "Download Manager"

By selecting the check box and then selecting "OK", the browser will automatically open any ".ica" files using the Citrix ICA Client that you download from this point on. If you need to, you can modify this setting at a later date by opening up the browsers preferences as shown below:

Mozilla Preferences - Helper Applications
Firefox Preferences - Downloads

Camino, another Mozilla group browser, does not give you the option of opening the file up automatically with the Citrix ICA Client. Each time you download a ".ica" file, the browser will display the "Download Manager" window shown below. To view the ".ica" file using the Citrix ICA Client, select "Open".

Camino "Download Manager"
