iTunes Burning Basics [2008.05.13]

These are basic instructions on how to burn a DVD/CD by using iTunes. If you require more information or have additional questions, please examine the "iTunes Help" online documentation.

Before Burning

Check to make sure that you insert the a blank recordable CD into the DVD/CD drive. If not, press on the "eject" key located at the top right of the keyboard to eject disc.

To launch iTunes, open the "Apple" Menu in the upper-left corner of the desktop. Select the "Audio" folder, then select iTunes.



Configuring iTunes

After iTunes has launched, you will see the main iTunes windows on the screen. On the left will be a pane that displays what is on the playing list. On the left will be iTunes options. The disc type that iTunes is capable of are Data, Audio, and Video. iTunes only burn audio CD, MP3 CD, and Data CD/DVD.

NOTE: If you get an error when attempting to launch iTunes, please notify a consultant at the service counter.



First, make sure that you select the correct disc type by selecting the "Preference..." under "iTunes" on the top menu bar as shown on the left and it should bring up the "Advanced" window as shown below. In the "Advanced" window, click on the "Burning" tab and you can now select a disc format. Click on "OK" after you are done.



After that, create a new playlist by clicking on the "+" sign at the bottom right of the main iTunes window as shown on the right and drag the song into the playlist on the left pane. After finishing adding songs, the main iTunes should looks like this below.




Burning a Disc

After finishing all the steps above, you are now ready to burn a disc. To start recording a disc, you can either click on the "Burn Disc" button on the right bottom of the main iTunes window as shown on the right or right click on your playlist and select "Burn Playlist to Disc". Either way will start the burning process. Once you start the process, the Disc will no longer be able to store any more data.

Note:

The number of songs a disc can hold depends on how the songs were created on your Mac. You can fit about 74 minutes of music (about 20 songs or 150 MP3 files) on a 650 MB CD. Some CDs can contain 80 minutes (700 MB) of music. A DVD can hold 4.7 gigabytes (GB), almost five times as many songs as a CD.
