Before Burning | Configuring Disk Utility | Burning a Disc

Before Burning

Check to make sure that you insert the a blank recordable DVD/CD into the DVD/CD drive. If not, press on the "eject" key located at the top right of the keyboard to eject disc.

To launch Disk Utility, open the "Apple" Menu in the upper-left corner of the desktop. Select the "Utilities" folder, then select "Disk Utility".

Configuring Disk Utility

After Disk Utility has launched, you will see the main Disk Utility window on the screen. On the left will be a pane that displays your volumes & images. On the right will be the settings and options. Disk Utility is only capable of burning a data disc but it could add encryption into the disc for security purpose.

NOTE: If you get an error when attempting to launch Disk Utility, please notify a consultant at the service counter.

To burn data with Disk Utility, you need to open a disk image or create a new disk image.

To open a disk image, select "Open Disk Image..." command from the "File" menu and select the disk image.

Else, create a new disk image by clicking on "New" in the "File" menu and seleck "Disk Image from Folder..." as shown below and select a file for toasting into a Disc. Click on "Image" when ready.

For security, you can require a password to access the contents of the image, by choosing "AES-128" from the Encryption pop-up menu.

Then, choose a format of the image:

  • If you want to continue adding files to the disk image after it's created, choose read/write.
  • If you don't need to add more files to the disk image, choose read-only.
  • If you don't need to add more files to the image and you want to conserve space, choose compressed . The disk image takes up only as much space as the data on the image.
  • If you want to use the disk image with a third-party application, choose CD/DVD master. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they're used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit.

After choosing a image format, click on the "Save" button. A disk image in .dmg format is created in the Disk Utility window on the left section as shown below. Double clicking on the disk image will mount the disk image and it will appear on the Desktop. Mounting the disk image on Desktop will display the content of the disk image.

Burning a Disc

When you are ready to burn the image into a DVD/CD, click on the "Burn" icon on the top-left of the main window as shown on the right. Next, a window will pop up as shown below. Clicking on the extend button on the top-right will bring up the burn options. If you want to burn multiple times, it is recommended using a CD-RW or DVD-RW and click on the option "Leave disc appendable". Then select other options like the burning speed and click on the "Burn" button when ready.
