On the Macs, there are five applications that allow users to burn data, music, or video onto blank DVDs and CDs:

Toast Titanium | iTunes | iDVD | Disk Utility | Finder

Toast Titanium

Toast Titanium is a universal disc burning application that can be used to do the following:

  • Back up files and folders to CDs and DVDs including photographs.
  • Enhance the sound from your music files and create your own CDs
  • Create DVD playable movies or slideshows from your still photographs.
  • Convert QuickTime video files or iMovie project files into playable DVDs.

The application, however, can do far more than just what is listed above. For additional information about the features Toast Titanium, please click here.

Disk Utility

Disk Utility is the name of a utility created by Apple for performing disk-related tasks in Mac OS X. These tasks include:

  • the creation, conversion, compression and encryption of disk images from a wide range of formats read by Disk Utility to .dmg or .cdr, which is identical to the .iso format;
  • mounting, unmounting, and ejecting disks
  • burning disk images to CD or DVD in HFS+ format;
  • erasing CD-RWs and DVD-RWs;
  • adding or changing partition table between Apple Partition Table and GUID Partition Table;

Disk Utility makes it easy to make an exact copy of a CD or DVD that can be stored on a hard drive as a disk image, or burned to a CD or DVD for future use.

Finder

When you start up your computer, the Finder opens. The Finder is a program that’s responsible for managing your files, applications, disks, network connections, and devices such as printers. The Finder is always on when your computer is running, though it may be in the background if you’re using another program. The Finder provides a menu bar along the top of the screen, and a Dock at the bottom edge.

The Finder can also burn a DVD/CD as a backup but it will consume all the space in the disk. If you want to burn items to a disk in more than one session until the disc is full, use other software like Toast or Disk Utility. This is called multisession burning.
