Policy for Digitizing Audio/Video Clips for Student Projects and Presentations

It is the responsibility of the individual to use materials within the copyright guidelines:

Knowledge Commons Copyright Guidelines
It is illegal and unethical to copy copyrighted materials, including software, music or video. The collections of the Marriott Library, Knowledge Commons are copyrighted and therefore subject to copyright laws.
Patrons using materials from the Knowledge Commons collections, assume responsibility for using an item within the copyright guidelines.
In general, it is not a violation of copyright to use Knowledge Commons materials in a face-to-face teaching situation, where no admission fee is required. However, duplicating a work, charging admission for viewing or listening to a work, broadcasting or transforming a work into another format other than the original, may be a violation of copyright and permission from the copyright holder should be obtained before use.

Use and Retention:
General guidelines for extent of work to be copied is 10% of the artistic work (i.e. 6 min. of a 60 min. program)

Copies may be used in a face-to-face teaching environment

Copies may be retained for one semester and then must be destroyed


Knowledge Commons Assistance:
A signature from a faculty member verifying that materials willl be used in class will be required before students are given instructions.

Students will be advised of the copyright guidelines.

Knowledge Commons will provide basic written instructions for capturing and digitizing clips. Students may make an apointment for some basic assistance, but will be encouraged to follow the written instructions.

Knowledge Commons will NOT provide DVDs or drives for transfer of media, advanced training in digitizing materials, or will not do the project for the student.
